The History

With the desire to have a greater impact on more children in Greenville County, the idea of Mentor Upstate emerged from an existing model of mentor relationships at the Frazee Center, a nonprofit organization for under resourced children. The program was designed to seek a practical commitment from adults that could potentially have a positive and lasting impact on many children in our community.

The Growth

Mentor Upstate began by partnering with Greenville County Schools to establish programs in just 13 schools across the district and eventually expanded to over 100 schools in six counties across the upstate of South Carolina.

The Future

In March of 2020, all school districts across the state were forced to move to virtual learning due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The doors were closed to volunteers for the 2020-2021 school year, and a stark and devastating reality is that over 1200 mentor relationships were abruptly interrupted and many were lost entirely.

However, the good news is that we began to relaunch the program in Greenville County Schools in the fall of 2021 and our goal remains the same. We strongly believe that the need for mentors is now greater than ever.
